Cold air is dry. When you inhale it, your airways must warm and humidify it rapidly. This process can trigger bronchospasm (airway tightening), especially during exercise.
The rapid heat and moisture loss from the airway lining causes mucosal drying and inflammatory mediator release. This is why cold air triggers coughing, wheezing and chest tightness in many people.
Breathe through your nose (warms and humidifies air before it reaches lower airways). Wear a scarf or balaclava over your mouth and nose. Warm up gradually before intense exercise. Consider indoor exercise on extremely cold days (below 20°F).
Lungora’s antioxidant ingredients support the cellular health of airway tissue. But physical protection (nose breathing, face covering) is the primary defense against cold air irritation.
