Pulmonary Function Tests: What They Measure and Why

By The Lungora Team · September 2026

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are the gold standard for measuring lung health. Understanding them helps you have informed conversations with your physician about your respiratory status.

Spirometry: the core test

You blow into a device that measures FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 second) and FVC (forced vital capacity). The ratio of FEV1/FVC indicates whether there is airflow obstruction. Below 70% suggests obstructive disease.

Who should be tested

Adults over 40 with a smoking history, anyone with persistent respiratory symptoms, and people with occupational exposure to dust, fumes or chemicals. Testing is non-invasive, takes about 15 minutes and provides objective data.

Context for supplementation

PFTs measure what matters. Lungora provides nutritional support, but only PFTs tell you how your lungs are actually performing. If you are taking any respiratory supplement, baseline and follow-up PFTs provide objective accountability.
