Natural vs Synthetic Supplements: Does the Source Matter

By The Lungora Team · September 2026

The term “all-natural” appears on nearly every supplement. But does the source of an ingredient actually affect its effectiveness? The answer depends on the specific compound.

When source matters

Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol is better absorbed than dl-alpha-tocopherol). Folate (methylfolate is more bioavailable than folic acid for people with MTHFR variants). CoQ10 (ubiquinol may be better absorbed than ubiquinone in older adults).

When source does not matter

Most minerals (magnesium is magnesium regardless of source — the form/salt matters more). Synthetic Vitamin C is identical to natural. Many amino acids (L-Carnitine is L-Carnitine).

For Lungora

Our Turmeric Extract is plant-derived. CoQ10, ALA, L-Carnitine and Magnesium are standard supplement forms. The “all-natural” designation on our label is accurate but should not be the primary reason you choose any supplement.
